Devlog: Week 3 and 4

Hello! We’re Disobedient Cat, welcome to our first Devlog. Today we are going to be sharing with you the progress on our first game idea, “Project Soul”.

Our game idea consists of a classic metroidvania like genre, but with an interesting twist: It incorporates a symmetry axis along the middle of the screen, that creates two separate maps for the player to interact with. The catch is that there is a character on each side (each one representing one half of a split soul), but the player controls both at the same time, almost as if they were mirrored.

The player must carry both characters through their respective maps, to the level goal, where these astray souls will rejoin as one, once again.

From a gameplay perspective, the player controls both characters in a mirrored fashion. Both sides of the screen contain different map layouts, objects, enemies, and challenges that the player must solve to continue, forcing them to think asymmetrically.

In this regard, the challenge in developing this game resides not necessarily in the core mechanics, but rather in our capacity to generate harmony between both maps, in a way that allows one of them to not hinder progress in the other (to allow them to be compatible). There must be a clever relationship between elements of both worlds, this is to allow some kind of mutual interaction. For example, at some point in the game the character on the right has to open a path to the one on the left (that is stuck), with the help of an ability or special power.

In order to keep both sides of the symmetry axis unique, and to encourage the previously mentioned interactions, we intend to force some enemies and/or objects to interact with only  one of the two characters; this game mechanic will be accompanied by some sort of game element (e.g portals) that allow both characters to swap positions, increasing gameplay possibilities enormously.

The following sketch is a visual representation of the final look of the game:

Of course this is just a rough sketch, so changes are destined to be made, but we will let you know every two weeks what improvements and new ideas we develop for our project.

It's worth mentioning that this project will be developed using Godot game engine, using strictly free assets provided by itch.io or created by ourselves. All communication will be carried out in person, through Telegram or by Discord meets; all members have access to the resources that will be shared on Google Drive, and on our public Github repository.

Finally, all that is left to do is to thank you kindly for getting this far into our article, and for taking interest in our little project. If you have questions, suggestions or ideas, don’t hesitate to share them with us.

¡We will be eager to read all your comments and suggestions! :D
