Milestone 3
¡Happy Holidays!, and welcome to the last DevLog for our game. 👌
It’s been such a long time since we began the development of this game, and from the beginning you have been able to see all the effort we’ve put into it, and of course all the steps that took us to this moment, the final update and then release of Project Soul. Happy holidays and welcome to our last Project Soul Devlog. 😎
How can we forget the beginnings. (。T ω T。)
It started as a simple idea about one character whose soul and body were splitted, and only one way to restore itself, trying to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles.
But let’s go slowly.
Of course, you already know our two main characters.😉
And if you have played the development snapshots in previous devlogs, you should know how they move and what’s their special ability! They can turn into ghosts, the core mechanic to solve puzzles.👻
Also, you have seen the different menus and the HUD of the game, besides the traps, collectibles and levels.
So, what has changed since the last update? 🤔
The answer is simple, ¡Almost Everything! 🙀
First, we improved the code of the game a lot, rearranging and (hopefully) making it more efficient.
With all of this already in place, we implemented a damage system to both of our characters.
Finally, it was about time our characters got a little hurt. 🤩
Moreover, we made changes in the design of the game menus, we hope you like it.
Another change was about the amount of hearts you have at your disposal, now you have only 3, we think this is a more balanced approach and improves gameplay. Also we improved the counters for the collectibles, coins and keys you pick up while playing. Surprises await for those who pick up all the collectible kitties. 😻
One of the big improvements to the game was the development of a tutorial level, so now you can learn how to play and understand the basics of the game. :D
We also improved the first level, adding various sounds to all the elements inside it to make the gameplay more enjoyable.
At the same time we added elements that will help you to in your puzzle solving adventure, one of these are the beautiful yellow flowers scattered around the levels, so pay attention.
Also we finally changed the sprite of the doors, now you are not going to see the Godot icon anymore. 😆
If we focus on the second level, it has the same structure you remember from the previous Devlog, but now we’ve actually completed the puzzles and added the flowers, sounds, and some clouds at the end which hide a little secret. 😮
Finally, we have the work that one of our members did to let you understand the story behind our mysterious characters. We don’t want to spoil it to you, so we left just a few images of it, but check them out, they are very nice.
To end this Devlog, we want to thank all the people that made freely available on the internet all the sprites, sounds, fonts and other assets that we used to make this game.
Without all of them, this idea would have never seen the light of day, so we have properly credited them all in our credits menu.
If you liked some of the elements we used throughout the game, don’t hesitate to check their work out.
And that’s it. Like the novice game developers we are, this has been a great experience and a huge undertaking, that has teached us how this area of content development works, All of us have been delighted and continue to do so, with the stream of games that releases each year, and with Godot by our side, we’ve seen how small indie developers leave their mark in this industry with original ideas, even if the journey is hard and unforgiving. We encourage you to live through this experience, and thank you as a team for following us through this journey. We wish you happy holidays this year.
Thank you
